There are currently
seven battleships preserved as museums. Two other battleships, the USS Iowa
and USS Wisconsin, are being retained by the United States Navy as Reserve
Assets, for possible reactivation or future disposition.

The Mikasa
The Mikasa served as Admiral Togo's flagship at the
battle of Tsushima in 1905. Heavily damaged during World War II, the Mikasa
has been restored and may be seen "afloat in concrete" in Yokohama, Japan.
She is the only pre-dreadnaught battleship to survive to this day.

BB35 - USS Texas
The USS Texas is preserved as a museum ship at San
Jacinto, Texas. Large areas are open to the public. She is the only
first-generation dreadnaught (WWI era) battleship to survive to this day.

BB55 - USS North Carolina
The USS North Carolina is preserved as a museum ship at
Wilmington, North Carolina. Large areas are open to the public.

BB59 - USS Massachusetts
The USS Massachusetts is preserved as a museum ship at
Fall River, Massachusetts. Large areas are open to the public.

BB60 - USS Alabama
The USS Alabama is preserved as a museum ship at Mobile,
Alabama. Large areas are open to the public.

BB61 - USS Iowa
The USS Iowa, the name ship of the class, is most likely
the next ship to need a permanent home. The damage resulting from the turret
explosion in 1989 that claimed 47 lives has never been fully repaired. The USS Iowa is currently located
near the Naval War College in Rhode Island.

BB62 - USS New Jersey
The USS New Jersey is the most
decorated ship in the United States Navy. She served in World War II, Korea, and
Vietnam. As one of the Iowas in the best condition, she may be retained by the US
Navy in the reserve fleet (mothballed) for some time. The USS New Jersey is
currently in New Jersey, and being prepared for being open to the public.

BB63 - USS Missouri
The USS Missouri is perhaps the most
famous United States battleship, serving as the site for the Japanese surrender ceremony
at the close of World War II. The US Navy has awarded the USS Missouri to a
group which has placed her on display in Pearl Harbor, Hawaii. Limited parts of the
ship are open to the public.

BB64 - USS Wisconsin
The USS Wisconsin is in excellent shape, having
served as recently as during Operation Desert Storm as well as in Korea and World War II.
As the battleship in the best overall condition, she may be retained by the US Navy
in the reserve fleet for a number of years. The USS Wisconsin is currently in Norfolk, Virginia.
